Athens to Haifa
Greek mythology, courageous rebellions against Rome, and the rediscovered wonders of Petra’s sandstone tombs, temples, and treasuries are a few of the hallmarks on this 8-day journey along the eastern Mediterranean harbors and coastlines of Greece, Cyprus and Israel. Savor sweet, almond flavors of amigdalota pastries in Mykonos, or catch a boat bound for the temples and amphitheater on Delos, the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Wander the shadowy recesses of the Minoan palace of Knossos on Crete, lair of the mythic Minotaur, and peruse ancient sacred relics at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. Follow Jesus’s footsteps through Gethsemane to the former garden and olive grove where he was arrested, and visit the cave of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Ride a cable car to the imposing heights of Masada Fortress. Float in the warm, mineral rich waters of the Dead Sea. Stroll among Petra’s pink, sandstone columns and caves in the glowing morning light.

“...enshrined in formidable Ottoman walls stands Jerusalem, Western Civilization’s contemporary crossroads of faith, where Muezzin calls to prayer reverberate off foot-polished limestone streets, intermingle with church bells and dissipate into the din of rumbling buses, bustling pedestrians, and rasping scooter engines.”
The Story
Sailing the eastern Mediterranean is a voyage of contrasts rich in ornate temples, opulent palace ruins and sacred legends celebrating ancient deities. Broken statues commemorating mythological might and cracked Ionic columns dot desolate ruins across isolated and forgotten islands.

To the south, enshrined in formidable Ottoman walls stands Jerusalem, Western Civilization’s contemporary crossroads of faith, where Muezzin calls to prayer reverberate off foot-polished limestone streets, intermingle with church bells and dissipate into the din of rumbling buses, bustling pedestrians, and rasping scooter engines. Despite extensive security measures with walls, wires, and fences to divide inhabitants, the irony of a shared sense of reverence for humanity’s most profound and timeless mysteries is not lost.

Further south in Jordan’s Dead Sea basin are Petra’s etched ruins and religious relics, which serve as stark reminders that theological beliefs and even the richest human habitations are transitory, a permanence limited to the integrity of stone against wind, water, and time. Here visitors gather in the cool predawn hours, waiting in anticipation for the first rays of dawn to radiate across ancient rose-pink sandstone set against a cerulean morning sky. It’s a collective sense of awe and wonder likely shared by former Nebataean inhabitants thousands of years ago.
Insider Tips:
  • The 16 iconic Greek windmills surrounding Mykonos Town are your first clue about strong winds. Windbreakers and hoodies are precautionary summer essentials here, but sunscreen is added insurance when playful offshore breezes tug at sunhats.
  • The most delicious way to spend time in Heraklion is sampling local sweet cheese pastries and bougatsa cream pies served at cafés and restaurants around Lion Square.
  • The cheapest authentic Rhodes entertainment is watching local fisherman land fish at sunset along the Old Town harbor. If you like that price but prefer your sinking suns with solitude, the breakwater at Fort of St. Nicholas provides unobstructed views.
  • Wineries thrive on Cyprus. You’ll find familiar mainstays like Chardonnay, Merlot, and Shiraz/Syrah, but seek out prized regional white Xynisteri and red Mavro wines because they rarely land on store shelves off the island.
  • Dress for access. Men’s shorts are forbidden at Jerusalem’s holiest destinations, so consider convertible travel pants featuring zip-off legs for versatility and light packing. Women’s clothing guidelines are more specific, encouraging skirts with hems at least beneath the knees and blouses that cover shoulders and upper arms. Seek out appropriate length travel skirts featuring easy care, reversible fabrics for variety, and hidden zippered security pockets for valuables.
